Support for G.hn Grows Worldwide -- Homegrid Forum Adds New Members

HomeGrid Forum kicked off 2010 with a bang as it welcomed four new members to the global, non-profit trade group promoting the United Nations' International Telecommunication Union's (ITU-T) G.hn standardization efforts. HomeGrid Forum's new members include: Polaris Networks, Taiwan-based IC Plus Corp, the Institute for Information Industry (III) and Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute (KERI). Wal-Mart agrees to buy video company, Vudu

According to a New York Times article on Monday, Wal-Mart has agreed to buy Vudu, a movie service Silicon Valley start-up.

Vudu competes directly with the video-on-demand services of the cable companies, but they Vudu has tried to stand out from competitors with its large selection of HD movies, user friendly interface and social media integration via Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and Pandora.

Microsoft Unveils Windows Phone 7 Series

At Mobile World Congress 2010, Microsoft Corp. unveiled the next generation of Windows Phones, Windows Phone 7 Series.

With this new platform and the for the first time ever, Microsoft will bring together Xbox LIVE games and the Zune music and video experience on a mobile phone.

Every Windows Phone 7 Series phone will come with a dedicated hardware button for Bing, providing one-click access to search from anywhere on the phone, while a special implementation of Bing search provides intent-specific results, delivering the most relevant Web or local results, depending on the type of query.

HBO and Verizon FiOS TV Introduce HBO GO

Verizon and HBO announced that Verizon's FiOS TV customers will be the first to gain access to HBOGO.com, HBO's online video destination featuring over 600 hours of HBO programming.

HBO Go is part of the cable industry's TV Everywhere strategy to make TV content available online to paying subscribers.

Starting tomorrow, FiOS customers who subscribe to HBO will automatically receive free, unlimited online access to HBO programming at any time, from any U.S. location with a broadband connection. Customers must subscribe to both FiOS TV and FiOS Internet.

With HBO GO, FiOS TV customers who subscribe to HBO can instantly watch their favorite programs from a PC or MAC computer via a browser-based application. HBO GO will support Verizon subaccounts and allow up to three simultaneous users from the same household. Synacor Working with 14 CABLE operators to enable participationin Olympic Online Connect

AUSTAR and Rovi Sign IPG Patent License Agreement

Agreement Marks Growth of Rovi’s International Licensing Program

Rovi Corporation (NASDAQ: ROVI) and Austar United Communications Limited announced that they have entered into a multi-year license agreement for interactive program guide (IPG) patents owned by Rovi.

The agreement provides AUSTAR with a license to Rovi’s IPG patents for AUSTAR’s pay television services in Australia. AUSTAR is an affiliate of UPC Broadband in Europe, via parent company Liberty Global, Inc. UPC recently negotiated a similar agreement with Rovi.

Technicolor Announces Strategic Partnership with Warner Bros.

Technicolor has entered into a strategic partnership with Warner Bros. covering a broad number of areas.

Technicolor and Warner Bros. have entered into a long term contract covering replication and distribution services for DVD and Blu-ray discs, which is expected to start generating material revenue in third quarter 2010. Warner Bros. is the worldwide market leader in terms of physical media volumes (DVD and Blu-ray combined). Technicolor is the world leading replicator of prerecorded physical media.

The strategic partnership also covers other aspects relating to strategic technology initiatives.

SCTE LAUNCHES INITIATIVE TO DRIVE ADOPTION

The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE), today announced an unprecedented new initiative that is designed to help cable system operators to leverage the financial and environmental advantages of implementing “green” strategies.

The Smart Energy Management Initiative (SEMI), an expansion of SCTE’s leadership role in the application of environmentally-friendly and sustainable procedures and products, is intended to drive the creation of meaningful solutions for more efficient operations and economic benefit, as well as positive community impact. An inaugural forum in December, 2009 addressed facility powering issues and the industry-wide need for, and benefits of, comprehensive energy management plans.
